BREEDING AND GENETICS Heritability of Feather Pecking and Open-Field Response of Laying Hens at Two Different Ages

چکیده
The objective of the current study was to estimate heritabilities (h2) of feather pecking and openfield response of laying hens at two different ages. An F2 cross, originating from a high and a low feather pecking line of laying hens, was used for the experiment. Each of the 630 birds of the F2 cross was subjected to an openfield test (individual, 10 min) at 5 and 29 wk of age and to a social feather pecking test (groups of five birds on wood shavings, 30 min) at 6 and 30 wk of age. Both tests were performed in a square open field (1.25 × 1.25 m). Behavior was recorded directly from a monitor. Heritabilities of feather pecking and open-field behaviors were (

Response to commentary on “Examples of overlooking common sense solutions: the domestication gene and selection against mortality”
In a commentary in Frontiers, Van Rooijen (2014) states: “Today the developments in genetics are exciting. Perhaps this explains why geneticists sometimes seem to overlook common sense solutions. One example of this is the selection experiment done by Bijma et al. (2007a,b). . . . . . .As a result their selection seemed not very efficient.” In those two papers, however, we do not report a selec...
متن کاملEffect of Wet Feeding on Feed Conversion Efficiency in Laying Hens during Summer Season
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wet feeding on feed conversion efficiency in laying hens during summer season. The study was carried out on 192 pullets of eight weeks age (distributed to four groups). The feed offered to chicks consisted of starter diet up to 8 weeks of age and grower diet up to 20 weeks of age. From 20 weeks onwards, birds were provided with layer diet u...
متن کاملMapping of QTLs Controlling Egg Quality on Chromosomes 6-8, Z and Three Linkage Groups in Chickens
Two breeds of chickens were used to develop reference family and detect QTLs affecting egg quality traits: cocks of a native Polish breed Green-Legged Partidgenous (GlP) and hens of Rhode Island Red (RIR). During the first 100 days of the laying period, the GlP hens lay about 40 eggs weighting on average 50 g, whilst the RIR flock laid 83 eggs with a mean weight of 60 g. QTL analysis of egg qua...
متن کاملExamples of overlooking common sense solutions: the domestication gene and selection against mortality
Today the developments in genetics are exciting. Perhaps this explains why geneticists sometimes seem to overlook common sense solutions. One example of this is the selection experiment done by Bijma et al. (2007a,b). These authors developed a sophisticated statistical method of group selection against mortality in hens randomly placed together. One may safely assume that this mortality is due ...
متن کاملGenetics of Body Conformation and Feed Efficiency Characteristics in a Control Line of Rhode Island Red Chicken
This investigation aimed to assess genetics of body conformation and feed efficiency traits in a control line of Rhode Island Red (RIR) chicken taking single hatched out pedigreed 100 chicks at Central Avian Research Institute, Izatnagar, India. Data was analyzed by least squares analysis of variance. Least squares means of chick weight (CW), body weight (BW), shank length (SL), keel length (KL...
